  4.     The mob of 300 demonstrators did a thorough job on
  5. Venezuela's embassy in Tripoli last week, smashing furniture,
  6. torching rooms, even uprooting plants from the garden. The sacking
  7. followed the United Nations Security Council's imposition of
  8. sanctions against Libya for refusing to surrender six suspected
  9. agents sought in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Scotland
  10. in 1988 and a French airliner over Africa in 1989. Crowds also
  11. attacked or demonstrated before the embassies of other
  12. countries that had voted in favor of the sanctions.

  14.     Venezuela was apparently targeted because it had chaired
  15. the Security Council session that imposed the sanctions.
  16. Another object of mob ire was Russia's embassy. The former
  17. Soviet Union was once Libya's best friend and supplier in the
  18. "anti-imperialist" struggle.

  20.     But post-Soviet Russia has taken a firm stand against
  21. terrorism. At week's end, it joined with all the other members
  22. of the Security Council to strongly condemn the latest violence
  23. in Tripoli.
